Hacking the Demo—Higher ed

VCoLLectical Assessments are learning tools that support optimal growth by leveraging VCoL+7™ (the Virtuous Cycle of Learning and its +7 skills). And CLAS, our computerized developmental scoring system, allows us to deliver any number of Lectical Assessments—making it possible to optimize learning for everyone.

We've created the CLAS demo to show off CLAS and Lectical Assessments. The demo provides individuals with the opportunity to test drive Lectical Assessments and experience their learning benefits first-hand. Each assessment is a “mini” Lectical Reflective Judgment Assessment (LRJA)—a written response assessment of skills for:

  • gathering and evaluating information & evidence,
  • conducting inquiry,
  • working with conflicting perspectives,
  • making decisions, and
  • resolving conflicts.

Any individual can take the Demo LRJA up to three times (over 18 months), each time receiving a rich report that includes learning recommendations that are right in the test taker’s learning sweet spot—what we call the Goldilocks zone.

The CLAS demo for individuals is entirely free. Registration on our site is optional. To participate, all you'll need to do is provide the information we need to personalize your experience.

So, what if you want to test a class, an entire program, or a whole school?

Here's where it gets a little tricky. The demo is not designed to deliver group level data, so you'll need a "hack". There are two alternatives: a free hack and a not-so-free-but-very-inexpensive hack.

Using the CLAS demo to test a group (free version)

If you're interested in conducting your own evaluation or experiment with the CLAS demo—without our help—here's how it can be done.

  1. Decide whether or not students will register before taking the demo assessment. Registering makes it possible for students to return to view past results, but it's not required to take the assessment.
  2. Gather student data: You will not have direct access to student reports online, so to collect student data, it will be necessary for students to download their reports. We suggest that you ask test-takers to save their reports as pdfs. 
  3. Tabulate the data: Collect the pdfs and transfer students' scores to a spreadsheet for analysis.
  4. The demo uses a beta version of CLAS. It's suitable for evaluations. research. and formative use, but we have not evaluated its suitability for high stakes use.

Please note that although we'll make every effort to provide support to individual test takers, we do not have the resources to provide free support for this "hack" of the CLAS demo.

Using the CLAS demo to test a group (paid version)

The paid version of the CLAS demo is for researchers, colleges, or universities that would like to conduct program evaluations or experiments with the LRJA. There are several good reasons to do a CLAS demo evaluation. It will (1) provide your students with a rich learning experience, (2) help you show off your school's accomplishments, and (3) give you an opportunity to learn how Lectical Assessments can help your teachers optimize learning.

CLAS demo evaluations have the free CLAS demo at their core, so the assessments themselves are completely free. We need to bill for the additional services required to track your students, prepare your data, and deliver reports.

If you're interested primarily in an evaluation of your curriculum’s impact on the development of LRJA skills or want to conduct research with the assessments, we’ll bill for setup, data delivery, and reporting. If you would also like instructors to learn to use the assessments to support optimal learning, we can tailor a workshop for you. In any case, for the most robust results, we recommend that students take the assessment 3 times, approximately 9 months apart.

**CLAS demo assessment results are suitable for supporting individual growth and conducting program evaluations. They should not be used in high stakes decisions about individuals.

Student accounts

To participate in a paid demo evaluation, each student will need an account on our site. This means students will need email addresses and access to their email accounts in order to use our system. We do not need to know student names, we never send promotions to students or share student information, and we use the latest security technology to protect all user information.
